Eric Carle (June 25, 1929 – May 23, 2021) was an illustrator and writer of children's books. His picture book The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies. Carle was born on June 25, 1929, in Syracuse, New York. Steven Kellogg was born 26 October 1941 in Norwalk, CT, the son of Robert E. and Hilma Marie (Johnson) Kellogg. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design (B.F.A., 1963) and did graduate study at American University. An author and illustrator of children's books and artist, Kellogg has also been an Instructor in etching at American University (1966) and taught printmaking and painting.
